WE ARE SORRY TO ANNOUNCE
THAT THE GOOD SHEPHERD CAMPGROUND
IS CLOSED INDEFINITELY
DUE TO THE FLOOD OF JULY 2002
Flood of
2002
At around 2:00 AM on Tues, July 2nd, 2002
it began to rain. When the rains finally ended about 5 days later, rain
gauges had registered over 30 inches, a record for any such period in the
Sabinal Canyon. Early Tuesday and again on Thursday, we experienced
back-to-back record rises in our normally passive and beautiful
little Sabinal River.
The damage done in these two rises wiped out hundreds of families' homes,
businesses, livestock, and one kind soul whom we knew as "Doc".
The debris still hangs from high trees, fences, and wrecked vehicles. The
devastation did not spare our businesses including Utopia Silver. In
addition to the business you all know, we had a beautiful
campground here and a small metal fabricating business. We will probably
not re-open the campground because of the terrible responsibility, which
could easily have included loss of life.

The recreation hall

This was after the first flood, just
days later a second flood happened and the restroom fell into a large hole
and is only partially visible now.

We are so thankful for all
the wonderful people that have come to Good Shepherd Campground in the past,
and we know that 'man makes his plans, but God orders his steps'. We will
continue to make plans and let you know via this website.
Thank you and may God Bless
your family as He continues to bless ours,
Regards,
Denise and Bill Fernald
